Super League is back for another year of oval-shaped action from the 13-man code. And 2016 is particular pertinent as it marks the 20th year since Super League’s inception.
To mark this momentous occasion, we’ve compiled some of the best tries spanning the last two decades.
1996: Henry Paul Wigan V St Helens
Those with a keen eye for mathematics will notice our first try doesn’t actually come from the Super League era (which wasn't formed until 1996).
Still, Wigan's (two years before they were rebranded as the Warriors) Henry Paul pounced on a loose drop out to complete a frankly unique score and squeeze into our top tries roundup.
1998: Jason Robinson Wigan Warriors V St Helens
Full back Jason Robinson will go down in rugby folklore for his mesmeric footwork in both league and union.
Here, he combines that trickery with blistering pace to do what he does best – cross the whitewash.
2000: Chris Joynt St Helens V Bradford Bulls
No walk down Super League memory lane would be complete without another look at this famous try.
Coined “Wide to West” based on Eddie Hemmings' commentary on Sky Sports, Joynt finished off an extended period of keep ball to beat Bradford Bulls with just seconds to spare.
2003: Brian Carney Wigan Warriors V Leeds Rhinos
Wigan are enjoying themselves so far in this countdown, and another of their legends makes an appearance in 2003.
A winger of significant class, Brian Carney showed no small amount of power and pace to wrestle his way through the Leeds Rhino’s defence and pull away for an epic Grand final try.
2005: Brent Grose Warrington Wolves V Wakefield Wildcats
Aussie back Brent Grose forged himself a reputation for outstanding solo efforts, not least due to this mazy run against Wakefield Wildcats.
Not to be satisfied with one full-length try, Grose scored another superb effort from his own dead ball area in 2005 - this time against Widnes
2006: Francis Meli St Helens V Leeds Rhinos
A fleet footed winger is able to spring defence into attack in seconds.
No better is that displayed than here, as Francis Meli gets St Helens on the right side of this countdown by palming off a Leeds Rhino’s defender and sprinting the length of the pitch for a superb try.
2011: Damian Blanche Catalan Dragons V Huddersfield Giants
Some of the most spectacular tries are those that see a winger plant the ball beyond the try line as they fall out of play.
Damian Blanche shows precision and good hands to make this score despite being tackled in the process.
2015: Josh Griffin Salford Red Devils V Hull FC
Rangi Chase has never been far from controversy in recent Super League seasons, but this outlandish assist will live longest in the memory.
Chase even foxes his own teammates with his hand-based trickery, before rolling a pinpoint pass out to allow Josh Griffin the glory.
2015: Ryan Hall Leeds Rhinos V Huddersfield Giants
A number of these tries are even more impressive when you consider the context with which they were scored.
Ryan Hall rounds off our reminiscent walk through Super League’s greatest tries with one that secured Leeds Rhinos the League Leader’s Shield after the hooter had sounded.
